Professional quality, assembled and tested, 4x3 matrix keyboard with analog output (One-Wire output) allows you to connect it to your Arduino using only 1 analog input. The 12 keys are encoded as different voltage values on the output pin. Also includes a LED and a piezo buzzer for feedback to the user.
Normally you would need 7 pins to connect to a 4x3 keyboard. Since this keyboard generates a unique analog value for each key it only requires one analog input leaving the other 6 I/O pins on your Arduino free for your project. Also, it is much easier and decorative to use a regular phone cable to connect to this keyboard than using 7 conductor cable.
The enclosure is formed by mould injection which gives it a smooth, professional finish. On the inside pins and hooks serve to fix the printed circuit board firmly into position. The housing is high enough so you can fit another circuit board in it (for example an Arduino Mini Pro),.
The 12 keypads go through a series of resistors of the same value that allow this keyboard to generate a unique analog voltage for each key. The voltage values are equally spaced and have good separation so they don't overlap.
Red 3mm LED, current limiting resistor is on board.
Piezo Buzzer, emits high pitch when +5V are applied.
Both are accesible via separate pins on the connector.
Mounting & ports:
The keyboard enclosure has a back panel which you can mount on a wall or door. It has an opening so you can route the cables directly through it.
On the lower border of the enclosure are also 2 ports which you can break away easily to pass your cable.
The keyboard comes standard with upright pins so you can use a connector for easy connect and disconnect.
3 extra "pass-through" pins are provided on the connector. These allow you to terminate the incoming cable at one point and gives you the possobility to route 3 extra signals to other parts you might want to add to your keypad such as a solenoid to open a door.
Adding extra boards:
The enclosure is high enough to allow an extra board to be mounted on top of the kit's board. The connector pins are compatible with the Arduino Mini Pro (shown in photo) so can place a controller inside the enclosure. If you prefer, you can instead add a board of your own, just watch out for high components.
